Cancer Season: A Time to Regroup

Cancer season (approximately June 21-July 21) turns our attention inward. After the fast pace and scattered energy of Gemini season, this is a time to slow down, check in with yourself, and get clear on what actually supports you—emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

It’s not about productivity or big plans. It’s about care. It’s about asking yourself, “What do I need right now?” and actually listening.

Cancer, a cardinal water sign, marks the beginning of summer—it begins with the summer solstice, the apex of the year’s solar energy, and the days only get shorter from there. After Gemini season’s burst of intellectual and social energy, Cancer season invites us to slow down, smell the roses, and give ourselves the nurturing love, care, and quiet attention we deserve.

VII The Chariot: Cancer’s Tarot Card

The tarot card associated with Cancer is The Chariot. At first glance, that might seem contradictory—The Chariot is all motion and forward drive, while Cancer is all softness, stillness, and care. But The Chariot is also a container—a protective shell that allows us to move forward without losing ourselves. Like the crab’s shell, it offers structure, safety, and a sense of home we can carry with us.

Just as The Chariot balances opposing forces to move forward with purpose, Cancer season helps us reconnect with what truly matters so we can move ahead with integrity. This is a time to check your emotional alignment before charging off in a new direction. Are your inner needs and outer actions actually working together? The answers to those questions may be more important than the destination itself.

That’s why I’ve created a Cancer season tarot spread to help you explore what your inner needs really are, and how you can direct your “chariot” (creative energy) to move in alignment with those needs. Read on to see how you can use this Cancer season tarot spread for yourself, or click here to work with me one-on-one, and I’ll customize your reading to your specific questions, needs, goals, and desires.

Tarot Spread for Cancer Season

This tarot spread invites you to explore the care, support, and direction you truly need this Cancer season in order to direct your metaphorical “chariot” in alignment with your goals and your highest potential. Of course, you can perform a reading with this spread at any time of year, but you may find it to be an especially potent and appropriate tarot spread for the intimate and nurturing energy of Cancer season.

This is a four card spread inspired by the loving energy of Cancer and the archetype of the moon mother. Below, I’ll walk you through how to use this spread to reflect on your needs, nurture your inner child, and guide your creative energy.

Selecting Your Cards

Start by shuffling your cards while being fully present with your heart and your body sensations. I sometimes like to tell my cards about the spread I’ll be using while I’m shuffling, so that they can “get themselves in order.” You may also want to announce to your cards while shuffling whether or not you intend to read reversals, and how you intend to select your cards—“e.g., (1) by cutting the deck and drawing four cards off the top, (2) by fanning the deck and selecting four cards intuitively, (3) by shuffling loosely until four cards jump out of the deck, or perhaps (4) by searching for The Chariot (the tarot card associated with the sign of Cancer) and pulling the four cards directly behind it.

Unless you are using the fourth method, you may wish to remove The Chariot from the deck before shuffling to use as your significator for the reading (this is how I did it in my demonstration, for which I used the first method).

When you have shuffled to your satisfaction (trust your intuition), select your four cards in the following order:

  1. Home
  2. Maiden
  3. Mother
  4. Crone

Understanding the Spread

The concepts of home, motherhood, and the moon are all intimately linked to the zodiac sign of Cancer, and all are featured in this Cancer season tarot spread. At the heart of the spread is the Mother energy (Card 1: Mother, representing your creative and nurturing powers). This mother energy is fed by the love poured into your inner child (Card 2: Maiden) and the wisdom offered up by your spirit guides, ancestors, mentors, intuition, and experience (Card 4: Crone). All of this takes place at the center of the energy you choose to surround yourself with (Card 1: Home).

One thing to note: despite the distinctly feminine archetypes in this spread, this Cancer season tarot spread is not just for women. Anyone can use and benefit from this spread. I have used the terminology of maiden, mother, crone because that is the terminology associated with lunar triple goddesses and because motherhood is one of Cancer season’s themes. If you prefer, you may call the positions by alternate names, such as Inner Child (instead of Maiden), Creator, Gardener, Chariot Driver, or Nurturer (instead of Mother), and Sage, Wisdom, or Guidance (instead of Crone).

Cancer Season Tarot Spread - spread positions: Home, Maiden, Mother, Crone
When you have shuffled to your satisfaction (trust your intuition), select your four cards in the following order: Home, Maiden, Mother, Crone.

I created spread cards (inspired by the Deck of 1000 Spreads) to label the positions in this spread which you can see laid out above, but in case you’d rather have a handy digital graphic, I’ve got you covered!

Interpreting the Cards

Let’s break it down one card at a time:

Home: what to surround yourself with this season (Cancer season tarot spread)

Card 1: Home

Home, our first spread position, tells you what to surround yourself with in this season.

  • What sort of boundaries do you need to set or enforce?
  • Who should you invite closer, or keep at a distance?
  • Should you surround yourself with inspiration, stimulation, and social energy?
  • Should you seek peace, quiet, and solitude?
  • Should you stay home, or seek comfort or adventure elsewhere?

Card 2: Maiden

Maiden, our second spread position, tells you how to love, nourish, and nurture yourself and your inner child this season.

  • What do you need to do or receive in order to have a full cup?
  • Are you receiving the love and support you need from the people in your life?
  • Are you giving yourself the love and care you deserve?
  • Do you believe you deserve the love, care, and support you need to be successful and fulfilled?
  • Are you communicating your needs to those who would help fill your cup?
  • What parts of your inner child need healing at this time?
Maiden: how to love, nourish, and nurture yourself/your inner child (Cancer season tarot spread)
Mother: how and where to direct your creative energy this season (Cancer season tarot spread)

Card 3: Mother

Mother, our third spread position, tells you how and where to direct your creative and nurturing energy this season. Your ability to do this successfully will depend on honoring the guidance of the other three cards in this spread.

  • What in your garden (literal or metaphorical) needs tending to?
  • What projects, dreams, and goals already underway need continued attention?
  • What dreams, visions, ideas, plans, or goals are begging to be alchemized into action?
  • What relationships in your life would benefit from love and attention?

Card 4: Crone

Crone, our fourth and final card in this spread, offers you wisdom to guide you through this season.

  • What is something to keep in mind as you build your approach to integrating the wisdom of the other three cards?
  • Does your card echo any part of your intuition, or any message you’ve been receiving from spirit guides, deity, or well-meaning friends and family?
Crone: Wisdom to guide you through this season (Cancer season tarot spread)

Demonstration: Cancer Season Tarot Reading for the Collective

Below, I’ve embedded a video of the reading I performed for the collective (that includes you!) using this spread for Cancer season 2025. Take what resonates and leave the rest, or simply let it guide and inspire you to do a similar reading for yourself!

Variation: Rune Reading for Cancer Season

If you prefer to read with runes rather than tarot cards, you can totally use this as a Cancer season rune spread! It’s pretty much unchanged, with one minor exception:

Instead of using The Chariot as your significator, if you choose to use a significator at all, use the rune Raido. The rune Raido in the Elder Futhark represents the wheel of the sun chariot in Norse mythology. The chariot aspect of Raido makes it a perfect counterpart to The Chariot tarot card, but the fact that it’s the wheel of the sun chariot also ties to Cancer season starting with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and the time when the sun is at its most powerful. Raido is often translated simply as “journey” and can refer to a literal journey (travel) or to your path through life – specifically the right path for you.

Alternatively, you could use Jera as a significator, which represents summer and the harvest, and which bears an uncanny resemblance to the astrological symbol for Cancer. Jera’s meaning has less to do with the domain of Cancer season, but you may find it appropriate nonetheless. At a stretch, I might say it relates to the Mother position in our spread, since it has to do with investing nurturing energy (although I’m not sure how I feel about the implications of viewing mothering through the lens of reaping a harvest as your goal). Besides, the mother rune is Berkana, the breasts of the Earth Mother – which, now that I think of it, could also be a very appropriate significator for a Cancer season rune reading… is this overcomplicating things? Is this too much information? I want to empower you with knowledge, but I don’t want to confuse you… in any case, it’s just a significator! Go with Raido if you don’t want to think about it too much. Then again, if you don’t want to think about it too much… are you someone who would seek out a Cancer season rune spread? Isn’t overthinking a bit of a trademark of us divination-lovers? Moving on!

You can draw your four runes however you like, but you may enjoy this method:

Mix your runes thoroughly in their bag, then cast the whole lot out upon your reading surface. Search through the cast runes until you find the Raido rune (or whichever rune you have chosen as your significator). The runes above, below, and directly to the left and right of your significator (I’ll use Raido in my example) are the runes you will use in your reading.

If you want, you can combine runes and tarot! Just pull one card and one rune for each spread position and read them together.

Sample Readings

Here are two sample readings with this Cancer season tarot spread, including one that uses it as a rune spread:

Sample Tarot Reading

I used this spread to perform a tarot reading for the collective for the 2025 New Moon in Cancer, and drew the Five of Pentacles, Divine Wisdom (a card unique to the Moonchild Tarot), The Magician, and The Wheel of Fortune. You can view the full reading here or read my abbreviated interpretation below.

  1. Home: Five of Pentacles
The Five of Pentacles in the Home position indicates the need for solitude in this season – peace, quiet, and thoughtful alone time. This may require setting and/or enforcing some boundaries.
  2. Maiden: Divine Wisdom
The Divine Wisdom card is unique to this deck (The Moonchild Tarot). In the Maiden position, it seems to indicate that your inner child needs to learn that it is safe to listen to and trust your intuition and the divine guidance your receive. (The solitude recommended by the five of pentacles will help with this.)
  3. Mother: The Magician
The Magician in the Mother position indicates that your creative and nurturing energy has potent manifestation powers. Listen to the divine guidance and intuitive nudges you receive (as per card 2) to know best how to direct and focus those powers, and to what end(s).
  4. Crone: Wheel of Fortune
The Wheel of Fortune in the Crone position offers up the wisdom that all tides change, all seasons turn, and this too shall pass. If you are someone who loves social and sensory stimulation (or is perhaps addicted to it), you need this short season of solitude all the more – but the time for it will pass before you know it. On the other hand, if you are someone for whom solitude is the default, while that may still be the current guidance for you, know that the time will come soon when it is also best for you to open up and venture out. The only constant is change.

Sample Rune Reading

To demonstrate this Cancer season rune spread, I cast out my runes for a sample reading. Here, Raido is the significator, and is accompanied by Mannaz in the Home position, Dagaz in the Maiden position, Thurisaz in the Mother position, and Berkana in the Crone position.

  1. Home: Mannaz
Mannaz in the Home position could indicate an invitation to spend time one on one with the person or people closest to you, and to reflect on your close relationships, including your relationship with yourself.
  2. Maiden: Dagaz
Dagaz in the Maiden position invites you to make space for transitions and transformations you may be experiencing. Although big changes may be happening in your life, don’t expect yourself to be fully adjusted and fully transformed right away. These things take time, and you deserve the time and space to fully experience the process of becoming.
  3. Mother: Thurisaz
One of the most important roles of the Mother archetype is the protection of her children through setting and enforcing boundaries, and using her Mama Bear claws (or crab claws?) when necessary. That is what Thurisaz is asking you to do here. In order to allow your inner child the time and space you need to transform (à la Dagaz), you may need to set some boundaries, defend against transgressors, and sharpen your claws.
  4. Crone: Berkana
Berkana in the Crone position serves as a reminder to give yourself the physical care you need. All the spiritual and emotional and relational stuff that we’ve just discussed… well, that’s great, but none of it works if you don’t take care of your physical needs. Remember to nourish your body (and perhaps this is also about remembering to nourish your mind and spirit) to support yourself through your current transformation.

After the Reading

Once you’ve completed your reading, you might be left wondering, what’s next? Not to worry! Here are a few suggestions for how to move forward. The last one is the most important!

Tarot Journaling

I always recommend journaling during and after a reading. Make note of the questions you asked, which cards came up in which position, and how you interpreted them. A little sketch is always helpful, or you can use some tarot stickers instead!

Journaling your readings means you can look back on them later, which can be especially helpful if you feel like you keep getting the same card or cards over and over again, if you learn something new about a card and want to see how it applies, or if you have new insights that might help you understand and interpret your cards better. Its also good to have a written reminder of the wisdom you are meant to be integrating, and it can be interesting to go back and see how you interpreted the cards at the time of reading. Plus, the simple act of writing out the reading and the wisdom gleaned helps it to stick in your mind better.

Spell to Support Your Goal

You may also wish to do a simple spell to assist you in achieving your goal or integrating your ideals. You may find it helpful to utilize the rune Raido and/or the imagery of the Chariot or the crab of Cancer in your spell. I think the best spells are the ones you write yourself, but if you’d like me to create a post about what this sort of spell could look like, let me know in the comments! I want to create the content that helps you make your everyday life more magical, so it’s always good to hear what would be helpful directly from you!

Integrate the Wisdom

Journaling and spellwork can help you achieve your highest potential, but they’re not the only paths to the top. Far from it! The most important thing you can do after a reading is incorporate the answers you receive and the lessons you learn into the way you live your life moving forward. This looks different for every person and every reading, and it’s not something I can tell you how to do in a blog post.

If you desire personalized guidance and support in completing and integrating a reading like this, you might be interested in my divinatory coaching services. In our sessions together, I help my clients have the most helpful readings possible by co-creating empowering questions and digging deep, but that’s not all. I also make sure all my clients leave with an action plan: specific steps you can take to integrate the wisdom from your reading into your everyday, so you can have a better and more magical quality of life.
