Description
The Reverse Portrait Studies began with an antique portrait engraving and the question of how to translate it into a color portrait… in reverse.
Working on the mirrored image, I began with the smallest details and topmost layers first, translating the original linework and adding color details and texture before gradually moving toward the larger shapes, colors, and final layers beneath.
Each finished piece transforms a historic black-and-white image into something new — a conversation between past and present, reproduction and reinvention, old lines and new color.
Every portrait is an original gel printed painting with its own personality, and expression.
Each portrait is:
- printed nearly edge-to-edge on 5×7″ paper ready for framing
- signed on the front with full title and signature on the back
- an original one-of-a-kind artwork handpainted in reverse on a gel plate before being transferred to paper
